TSAMMA SEASON
tsamma

by Rosemund J Handler

The beautiful descriptions of the Kalahari, an understanding and deep respect for the Bushmen, the strengths of family love and friendships are all encompassed in the story of an isolated, hard but rewarding life, that for unexpected reasons become a shattered dream.

TSAMMA SEASON is set at the end of the 19th century, when the life of a pioneer was harsh, prejudices were rife and pleasures were simple.

Told in the form of a young girl's journal, the unemotional and somewhat factual style of writing actually makes the whole story more realistic. Without the encumbrance of dialogue, one can empathize more with young Emma's thoughts and feelings. I found I wanted to know what was going to happen next, yet wanted to put the book down and think about what I had read.

This is not an intellectual book that means you have to re-think what you have read and try and understand it, but a compassionate and delightful read - even if the ending is not what you may want it to be!
