RARE ENCOUNTER

The Okapi is the only living relative of the giraffe, not the zebra as one would presume With reddish-brown fur that is as soft as velvet, the Okapi's coat is oily making it water proof. They are approx 2 – 2.5 metres in length and approx 1.5 – 2 metres in height. Their diet is mostly leaves, twigs and fruit and they can eat up to 29kgs a day.

The earth was literally hissing - sighing with relief?
LETTER FROM ETHIOPIA

DIRE DAWA is gorgeous. Its clean (unbelievably clean), and cobbled streets, old colonial buildings but European style rather than English colonial, mixed with a bit of Arab. Its quite green and ringed by mountains and has a charming character with the horse drawn buggies and the tuk tuks dashing around. I have nearly been run over numerous times as they drive on the right-had side.

Human Fences Crop spraying on the boundary of Kruger National Park

Threat to our protected areas by the human population explosion Along with global warming, floods, reduction of water quality, river and land pollution, air pollution, land degradation, unchecked mining, expansion of agriculture onto marginal land, draining of wetlands for agriculture and human development, misuse of agricultural chemicals and pesticides, etc, etc, - our remaining natural areas now face another – and even greater threat – they are now under huge siege from the exponential human population explosion.
